Welcome to Le Macchie

Ciao i'm Andrea Giurato the owner of" Agriturismo Le Macchie" a farmhouse in Pienza. For years me and my family have dedicated ourselves to our land with both respect and passion, cultivating wheat and producing our own olive oil d.o.p., transmitting our love for this place to the guests of the three comfortable and refined apartments inside our farmhouse "Araldo", built in the early 1600s.

Le Macchie is a farmhouse in tuscany located in the earth of the Val d'Orcia , close to Pienza, Montepulciano and Montalcino. The Val d'Orcia was added to Unesco's World Heritage List in 2004. The landscape of the Val d’Orcia was celebrated by painters from the Siennese School, which flourished during the Renaissance. Images of the Val d’Orcia, and particularly depictions of landscapes where people are depicted as living in harmony with nature, have come to be seen as icons of the Renaissance and have profoundly influenced the development of landscape thinking. For centuries this farmhouse, has been a part of this land where the stretches of wheat, the olive groves, genista, oaks, the clay earth of the Siena, Tuscany area, and Mount Amiata together establish a unique natural context.

Our olive oil

The olive is one of the main protagonists of the "Val d'Orcia" landscape. It has been since the remote past, well before the Etruscans who had cultivated it in the VII the century A.C.. At a later date, it was distributed and traded by the Romans who constructed "l'arca olearia",a sort of pouch for olice oil, in Rome where importing colleagues negotiated price and quantity. Nowadays, the olive represents a naturalistic alimentary heritage in all the Mediterranean and in a particular way, in Italy. Continue ...

The nature

In the heart of Val d'Orcia Natural Park and inside the Natural Reserve of Lucciola Bella, between Pienza and Montepulciano, immersed in a natural terrace overlooking Mount Amiata, the farm holidays Le Macchie assures a sojourn in contact with nature in a protected and uncontaminated oasis. Walking about the farmhouse one can meet coves, the so called "calanchi" and "biancane", characteristic erosive and argillaceous forms imbued with shell fossils, a memory of the marine environment of the past.

The Val d'Orcia is natural setting of extraordinary beauty. It has become known all over the world as the classic Tuscan landscape. Important films like the Oscar winners The English Patient, La Vita è Bella and The Gladiator were shot here just few minutes from our farmhouse, as well as Romeo and Juliet directed by Franco Zeffirelli, and most recently Under the Tuscan Sun, cementing the Val D’Orcia’s beauty in cinematic history. Ultimately, Shadow Dancer by the American writer/director Brad Mirman was filmed over the course of six weeks in the splendid farmland among Radicofani, Castiglion d'Orcia, San Quirico and Abbadia San Salvatore.
